Magdeburg is a centre for commerce

Magdeburg amazes with its strong economic performance

The state capital has developed rapidly since reunification. Today, it is a city with a contemporary image that is of great importance as a location for science and research, innovative companies in the mechanical engineering and service sectors as well as an administrative centre. Many neighbourhoods have developed into attractive residential areas and numerous modern cultural, sports and leisure facilities have sprung up. Unfortunately, these positive developments and the many high-quality amenities offered by our city are not always adequately perceived.
The aim of the “Magdeburg as a Centre for Commerce” campaign is to draw attention to the positive developments in the economic sector and to showcase Magdeburg's high-performing companies and the people who work for them. It also aims to encourage and help former residents of Magdeburg to become more aware of the developments in their hometown and to return here. To this end, examples of job offers are also displayed here.

The world's first artificial sweetener was produced in Magdeburg

In 1886, the chemist Dr. Constantin Fahlberg and the agronomist Dr. Adolph List founded the agrochemicals factory Fahlberg-List GmbH in Magdeburg. An unexpected discovery not only laid the foundations for the company's success, but still sweetens our everyday lives today. We are talking about saccharin, the first artificial sweetener that is 500 times sweeter than conventional sugar. Fahlberg List is the predecessor of today's Salutas Pharma GmbH, which, thanks to its plant in Magdeburg-Barleben, is Hexal's largest production site.
